#46: Use the Bibliomat

I’m on this thing called the “World Wide Web” a lot, and one day while completing my regular rotation of websites, I came across a link to this cool idea at a bookstore. Some guys built a book vending machine, called the Bibliomat, and for $2 it would ring a little bell and spit out a random old used book for you to love and enjoy.

Bonus: the name reminds me of the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror

I thought this was such a cool idea. I often have a hard time choosing books – there are so many out there – so the idea of a machine arbitrarily choosing one for me seemed intriguing. Then I found out that this book vending machine was actually at a store called The Monkey’s Paw in Toronto – a city I used to live in and visit regularly. I was resolved to go there and buy whatever book I was destined to own.

By some miracle I also found free parking!

Last weekend, I met up with my old friend Sam on the corner of Dundas West and Ossington, and we made our way into the small old bookstore. They had an interesting and random selection of old books scattered on tables inbetween walls of bookshelves; most were non-fiction, on topics like ‘Animals of Africa,’ 1970’s recipes, military histories, and everything in between.

I loved the design also. Reminded me of those old Hamilton Beach  appliances

There were only a few other people browsing the shop, so at first I was a bit self-conscious using the Bibliomat – which sat alone in the very back corner. But, eventually, I popped in my toonie, and out tumbled an old, green hardcover book thrillingly titled Elementary Geology for Canada.

Checking out my book with a latte and carrot cake at a bakery down the street

Part of me wished I would have gotten some battered old novel that a bunch of people had already read, or some 1960’s social handbook that was so obsolete as to be hilarious, but I’ll take my Geology lesson. I like rocks and stuff. My plan is to read this book from cover to cover, and I will report back with all my new knowledge. It is my destiny!
