#51 See a Concert or Two!

Occasionally, I will watch this new show on TV called 'Saturday Night Live' - sometimes it is funny, sometimes it helps me sleep - either way, benefits. One uneventful Saturday evening last Winter, I tuned in and saw this new band playing live - the Alabama Shakes.

They were cooler than cool. Fronted by a lady named Brittany Howard who has the most intense singing face I'd ever seen, the Alabama Shakes are exactly my kind of music - bluesy, old-timey rock and roll, a bit of country. I also really liked how yes - there is a woman in the band, but no - she is not getting attention by wearing studded leather bras and sapphire-crusted hot pants. She's just rocking out and being normal people cool. I like normal people cool.

So last week, my friend Sam and I went to their concert at Echo Beach in Toronto. I've been to this venue before, but I just have to remark on how cool of a stage it is. It's literally on a sandy beach, with probably the best view of the Toronto sky around. There were a bunch of food trucks and things there as well, but Sam and I had a big dinner at Jack Astor's beforehand.

We got there just as the second opening band came on, called the Craigslist Band (I think), who were great. Tongue-in-cheek country music.

While we were waiting for the main act, Sam and I had some fun drawing pictures in the sand:

The concert was pretty good, all-in-all. One thing though, they needed to turn up Brittany's mic, because half the time you couldn't really hear her. They also played quite a few low, slow songs - which are fine, but when your venue is a beach party, people just want to hear happy music. So a lot of people talked through the quieter songs, which were probably 2/3 of the set.

Still, though, Brittany Howard is the coolest.
