#61 Throw a BBQ

Earlier this summer, I went to a 'country' themed barbeque - beer in mason jars, cowboy hats and plaid, country music, hay bales, and even a rib cook off (that I actually won! So proud.) I've been to lots of barbeques before, but having a theme just made the whole thing so much more fun and interesting. I really, really wanted to try hosting my own themed barbeque, and conveniently, the perfect occasion came around:

My best friend, who I've known since Grade 1 when we played horses, dinosaurs, and Power Rangers at Recess, recently got engaged! As the maid of honour, I thought it would be cool to throw an engagement party barbeque for friends of the couple.

I went through a bunch of options when coming up with the theme - Luau party? (easy to find stuff at the party store!) Fancy dress?

I eventually decided that "The Simpsons" would be the theme - we are all very well-versed in classic Simpsons lore, and in fact, you could say that T and D's relationship started with a Simpsons reference. It seemed fitting.

Man, we had so much fun thinking of ways to incorporate Simpsons stuff into regular BBQ stuff: Pictures will do the talking here (note: to understand these you should probably be Simpsons-literate. If you are not, just enjoy the pretty colours and shapes)

2 dozen pink frosted donuts ordered from Grandad's Donuts in Hamilton. SO GOOD

Jeanie brought taquitos, and we all found out what they are. Delicious

....I couldn't help but get out the crafty and made photo props. Banner made by another member of bridal party, M

Sam also made a Simpsons-themed drink: the "Three-eyed fish" (I didn't see all the ingredients, but it was orange fanta and vanilla something with three ice-cube 'iceballs', tasted like creamsicle :)

Mmmmm, forbidden donut....
