#19 Get CPR Trained

Donezo! This weekend, I completed the Standard First Aid/CPR course at St. John's Ambulance in Hamilton. It's always good to know first aid and CPR, but the main reason I wanted to do this because it might help me get a job (and thus help me complete #5).

So I've watched all the little movie skit things (which actually weren't as bad as some of the education videos we had to watch in school. Anyone remember 'Some of Your Bits Ain't Nice' from Health class?), I've passed the easy multiple choice test, and now I've got my certificate! Woo I could totally save your life now! Or just lightly molest and put a blanket on you. Either way...

Check!  sooo happeeeeeee! doing my best crazy eyes
Actually, a lot of what I learned could be useful. Like, now I know how to work an AED (automated external defibrillator), I could probably do CPR on someone and I might be able to remember how to wrap a broken collarbone.

Some of the things the course teaches you do seem a little unnecessary though. For example, unless you saw the injury occur they recommend doing a head-to-toe body check on the person who is hurt, even if they clearly have only cut their hand or something. Just to make sure, I guess. But like, a head-to-toe body check requires you to basically feel up the afflicted person, including the naughty bits. They actually had us practice this on each other during class... So yeah, me and the girl who was my partner got to know each other preeeettttty well.

I had heard from most people that the course would be the boring-est weekend of my life...but I didn't actually find it that bad for the most part. It wasn't as boring as Driving School, that's for sure. Of course there were times when my mind drifted:

For example, these are my class notes.

And finally...now, I know injury and illness and first aid is real serious and stuff, but I couldn't help finding some of the illustrations in our handbook kind of funny. I took pictures of some of the good ones for your viewing pleasure.

Huah!

Hand in a bag. And they remembered the gift tag!

if this guy was ACTUALLY wolverine he wouldn't be having a heart attack.

That's some chick's eye falling out. The whole time we were talking about this I felt like throwing up. Hilarious!

If this caption didn't end with  "to safety" you'd think it was a whole different manual.

  1. Lol! Congrats. Love those pics. Proper tagging is important - it would be gross to get someone else's hand attached to your body. :S

  2. As a museum studies graduate, I concur with your observation that proper tagging is important!
